Reaching out to parents

Zohar welcomes the group.
Brooklyn parents of public school students attended two workshops in December at the UFT borough office. The meetings were organized by UFT Parent Outreach Coordinator Betty Zohar, who said she was pleased with the turnout and the enthusiasm in the room. Parents heard from UFT Special Representative Amy Arundell who spoke about how to interpret a school-based budget. Chris Proctor, a UFT industrial hygienist, spoke about health issues in the schools, including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin infections. Proctor also showed a video on hand-washing and demonstrated how easily germs can be spread. She used a nontoxic powder that is visible under a black light, shaking people’s hands and then going around with a black light to show all the areas of skin that were “contaminated.” Zohar said the parents were thankful to the union for organizing the events, which are held monthly.
Ayeola Davis of Brooklyn College Academy and Roderick Daley of IS 285 compare notes.
