School-related recognition

Making the rounds, Shelvy Abrams, chapter leader for paraprofessionals, stops to chat with (from left) Justine Addio of PS 164, District 20 Paraprofessional Coordinator Louise Burrito and District 21 Paraprofessional Coordinator Louise Tangorra.

The third Tuesday of each November has now officially been declared School-Related Professionals Recognition Day. The special day was added to the state calendar to coincide with American Education Week and was signed into law by Gov. Eliot Spitzer. There were a variety of celebrations as New York City schools honored their SRPs on the first recognition day on Nov. 20. Some schools treated their SRPs to breakfast or lunch. Some held after-school celebrations. On Staten Island, SRPs were treated to a trip to a local winery that proved to be quite a surprise for everyone. But in Brooklyn the celebration was boroughwide. Reginald Colvin, borough coordinator for paraprofessionals, arranged a 4-7 p.m. celebratory get-together that was attended by 400 at UFT Brooklyn headquarters.

Paraprofessionals and secretaries enjoy the Brooklyn celebration in their honor on the first School-Related Professionals Recognition Day.
