Hundreds of protesters, including UFT President Randi Weingarten, gathered outside the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 10 to demand a swift and decisive response by government and big business to the growing subprime loan crisis sweeping the nation. Rev. Jesse Jackson, who heads the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, organized the rally. He chose the Wall Street area because, while firms there were expected to pay out nearly $40 billion in bonuses to executives and financiers during the holiday season, more than 2.5 million families are expected to lose their homes to forclosure.
