Supplies party
Oct 1, 2009 5:07 PM
Tough economic times have made it hard for many parents to outfit their kids and buy the supplies they will need for the new school year. So it was the Discovery Channel to the rescue — at least for the parents whose children attend PS 102 in Manhattan. The educational channel decided to assist parents by providing backpacks filled with binders, notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, crayons and all the things dear to the hearts of elementary school students for each of the 325 pre-K to 5th-graders at the Title I school on the Upper East Side. Channel representatives picked Sept. 11 to distribute the limited-edition bags made from recycled Discovery Channel billboards during two assembly programs.
Backpacks made of recycled materials and filled with school supplies are lined up and waiting — one for each PS 102 student.
One has to wonder whether these little shoulders can hold that big bag. Teacher Lindsey Kent and District 4 Representative Servia Silva are about to find out.
First-grade teacher Ann Denyse helps a student hoist his new backpack up and on as a Discovery Channel representative looks on.
