Fourth-grade teacher Karine Martin shows Steadman Newton and his daughter, Taquanna Obie, a list of the evening’s activities.
The third annual Literacy Night at PS 289 brought 140 families — moms, dads and kids — to the Brooklyn school for an evening of entertainment, storytelling, good food and a chance to collaborate on a family autobiography. Each year attendance grows. Firefighters from the local firehouse were on hand with literature and the local library provided library cards.
Literacy Night took cooperation and a lot of helping hands including (from left) Chapter Leader Dorothy Connelly; Ansel Powell, guidance counselor; Cynthia Clarke, assistant principal of PS 396 which shares space with PS 289; Martine Guerrier, from the Department of Education, holding Andrina Alexander; Martha Williams, parent coordinator; and PS 289 Principal Dennis Jeffers.
It’s hard to tell who’s having the most fun: the very animated teacher/storyteller Glorious Mohammed or her audience.
