Led by teacher walkouts, Israel shows labor problems, too

The number of Israeli work days lost to strikes rocketed to 2.5 million in 2007, more than 200 times the number of days lost in 2006, a report by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor says.

While Israel saw just 30 strikes last year — down from 35 in 2006 — they lasted longer, largely due to prolonged strikes staged by the Association of High School Teachers and senior faculty staff at universities, as well as public sector strikes launched by the General Federation of Labor in Israel over labor agreements. Eighty-three percent of the strikes occurred in the public sector. Strikes in the education sector accounted for 17 of every 20 days lost.
