Teachers in Greece fight pension givebacks

Facing plans by the right-wing Greek government to reduce social security benefits, Greek schoolteachers went on strike on Nov. 26, with several thousand marching through Athens and Thessalonica. Protestors assailed plans by the conservative government to merge about 150 pension funds into fewer than 20, while cutting benefits and raising the retirement age for Greece’s aging population. Strikers were later joined by the journalists’ union and others.

The street protests are a lead-up to a nationwide general strike called for Dec. 12, over opposition to the plans, which will also cut benefits for millions of future pensioners.
