While some city workers have agreed to accept a city offer giving them a 17.5 percent raise over five years and a $1,000 signing bonus, Vancouver librarians are standing firm. The librarians and the other workers are all members of different Canadian Union of Public Employee locals; the locals who have settled agreed to honor picket lines set up by the librarians where they share work sites.
The librarians, members of CUPE Local 391, insist that an offer given to just 45 percent of the local’s membership was inequitable, and that it be extended to all members, specifically to those working under lower classifications. Observers say the strike could last through the new year.
