New York and New Jersey deliver for Hillary
Feb 19, 2008 11:24 AM
It was one of the most exciting and involving Primary Days ever in New York and, at least as far as the Democrats and the UFT’s favorite daughter are concerned, a very successful one.
Congratulations to UFT members for a tremendous effort before and on Election Day. The results speak for themselves.
And special congratulations to Nina Tribble, a UFTer and newly elected convention delegate committed to Hillary Clinton. Tribble received the highest number of votes in the 4th Congressional District in Nassau.
Other colleagues who were elected as Clinton delegates include NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi and NYSUT vice presidents Alan Lubin and Maria Neira.
A few facts about the huge campaign effort:
- There were 75,000 member-to-member phone calls.
- Sen. Clinton reached 25,000 members via automatic calls the night before the election.
- Phone banks were run in all five boroughs and retirees also ran banks in Nassau and Westchester.
- Many thousands of calls were made in the crucial last few days, including Election Day.
- Before the election, literature was distributed in door-to-door canvassing in Nassau County, at a Union Square rally, at subway stations in Park Slope and in downtown Brooklyn, in Harlem and on the Staten Island Ferry.
- On Election Day members did last-minute leafleting across the city and also along the parade route of the Giants Super Bowl celebration.
Clearly, when UFTers get turned on by a candidate they turn out with a great effort.
