Indispensable members

One of the union’s staunchest components celebrated itself on March 15 at the annual Parafest. For some 40 years, the paraprofessionals chapter has been an integral part of the UFT but for members who are not in special education it’s easy to forget what a tremendous asset these UFTers are.
Often they work with the most fragile students in the system. Besides working alongside teachers to help students learn, they also do the back-breaking and heart-breaking jobs — like lifting, feeding, toileting — that students with profound disabilities need help with. Some paras work one-on-one with kids who require special attention. Inevitably, the kids come to feel that these paras are like members of their family.
And because paras generally live in the communities in which their schools are located, they often form a vital bridge between those communities and the schools. This is especially important during campaigns — like “Keep the Promises” — when members of the community are asked to participate in political action.
As always, Parafest was a stimulating and happy affair. Besides honoring 14 members who exemplify the tremendous asset that paras bring to the city’s public school system, members were able to sharpen their skills at various workshops and to network, exchange stories and renew friendships.
It’s good that the paras take a day to honor themselves. For the important work they do, day in and day out, and for the continuing loyal support they offer to the UFT, we too honor all paraprofessionals.
