A salute to valuable members

A couple of weeks ago the union’s paraprofessional chapter held its annual celebration, Parafest, and, as always, it was a joyous affair. Along with honoring 14 outstanding members who exemplify the tremendous asset that paras are to the city’s public school system, members were able to sharpen their skills at various workshops and to network, exchange stories and renew friendships.

Paras work mostly in special education settings so many members of the union may not have first-hand experience with just how valuable these men and women are. They are extensions, backup, supplements and confidants for the teachers they assist. Often they work with the most fragile students in the system. They teach, but they also do the back-breaking and heart-breaking jobs — like lifting, feeding, toileting — that students with profound disabilities need help with.

It’s good that the paras take a day to honor themselves. We honor them, too: For the important work they do, day in and day out, we salute all paraprofessionals.
