Key UFT staff position changes announced

UFT President Randi Weingarten announced the promotion of two high-level staff members in May that she said would enhance the union’s ability to service members, especially in the light of the most recent reorganization of the school system.
UFT Secretary Michael Mendel, who has served as staff director since July 1, 2003, was promoted to executive assistant to the president. In his new role, Mendel is responsible for negotiations, personnel and contract enforcement.
Of her decision to delegate some of her duties as chief negotiator to Mendel, Weingarten said, “It is time for the union and for me to mentor others to do this critically important job, and I can think of no better candidate than Michael Mendel.”
Jeff Zahler, who has served as deputy staff director for the past two years, succeeded Mendel as staff director. Zahler was formerly the District 30 representative.
Both personnel changes were effective immediately.
