Teacher Union Day ticket deadline near

Time is running out to purchase tickets to the UFT’s annual Teacher Union Day.

Wednesday, Oct. 24, is the deadline to reserve your place among the 1,000 members expected to turn out to help honor this year’s award winners. The ceremony and luncheon will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. A registration form and more information appear on page 25.

Retired UFT Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Langiulli will receive the Charles Cogen Award, the union’s highest internal honor.

Langiulli has been a pivotal figure in the UFT leadership for nearly four decades. A teacher of high school English for 14 years before coming on board full time with the UFT, she has held many key posts in the union, serving as a chapter leader, District 27 representative, Queens borough representative, executive director of the UFT Leadership Institute, director of staff for the union and assistant secretary.

Earlier this year she won NYSUT’s “Sandra Feldman Not for Ourselves Alone Award,” which is presented to a woman each year to honor her outstanding efforts in the labor movement.

Other Teacher Union Day awardees include Jeffrey Zahler, UFT director of staff, who will receive the Jules Kolodny Award; Vice President of Elementary Schools Michelle Bodden and Vice President for Special Education Carmen Alvarez, who will get the David Wittes Award; Speech Chapter Leader Mindy Bornemann, who will be presented with the Sidney Harris Award; and Brooklyn chapter leaders Mario Matos (IS 296) and Geofrey Sorkin (IS 259) who will receive the Backer/Scheintaub Award.

Also, the Audrey Chasen Award will go to former teacher Charles Best, now CEO and founder of DonorsChoose; and Marsh/Raimo Awards will go to Brooklyn Special Representative John Settle; PS 112, Bronx, Chapter Leader Charles Flisser; PS 76, Manhattan, Paraprofessional Representative Lorine Romero; and Beach Channel HS Chapter Leader David Pecoraro.

Plus this year, for the first time, the union will present awards to six chapter leaders and principals of schools that exemplify a spirit of cooperation and professional partnership among all the members of the school community.

The Trachtenberg and Smallheiser awards also will be presented while other honors will go to 25-, 20- and 10-year chapter leaders, 50-year members, and title advancement awards including school secretaries, paraprofessionals and substitute vocational assistants who have become teachers.

The festivities will begin with breakfast at 8 a.m.
