Teacher study program: Toyota International Teacher Program offers teachers a 12-day study tour of the Galapagos Islands. Thirty teachers will receive an all-expenses-paid research excursion to the Galapagos Islands, Nov. 22 to Dec. 6. The teachers’ schools will receive $500 to defray costs of substitute teachers, etc. Full-time secondary classroom teachers (grades 6–12) can apply. DEADLINE: May 9. Public Policy research: The Pioneer Institute, an institute dedicated to public policy research, is accepting applications for its 2008 Better Government Competition, which in 2008 focuses on education. One grand prize of $10,000 and four runner-up awards of $1,000 will be awarded. The competition is open to anyone. Entrants should submit proposals that hold out realistic promise or have already delivered measurable benefits to K–12 students including: increased academic performance, decreased dropout rates, increased attendance rates, increased graduation rates, increased college attendance by urban high school graduates, greater sense of school safety and reduced school violence. Foundation grants: The Braitmayer Foundation is seeking applications for its summer grant cycle. The foundation is devoted to curricular and school reform initiatives, as well as preparation of and professional development opportunities for teachers, particularly those which encourage people of high ability and diverse background to enter and remain in K–12 teaching. Grants of $10,000 to $35,000 for one year are available. Grants can be used anywhere in the U.S. as seed money, challenge grants or to match other grants to the recipient organizations. Mentoring grants: The Actuarial Foundation is offering monetary grants to schools and groups throughout the U.S. and Canada through its Advancing Student Achievement mentoring program. Schools or groups seeking funding must develop a viable mentoring program involving actuaries in the teaching of mathematics to children in public and private schools. The foundation includes grades 4–12 but places emphasis on programs between 4th and 8th grade. All schools and groups willing to undertake a math mentoring program that involves local actuaries as volunteers are eligible. There is no deadline to apply, but you should have materials in at least two months before the beginning of your program. The foundation will help schools locate actuaries in their areas. Law foundation grants: The American Immigration Law Foundation’s Curriculum Center will award grants nationwide for the 2008–09 school year of $100 to $500 to fund a limited number of K–12 grade-level projects that provide education about immigrants and immigration. The foundation seeks to fund activities that are innovative and supportive of AILF’s mission of promoting the benefits of immigrants to our nation. Applications are limited to educators teaching in public or private schools. Proposals that are classroom-based will receive strong consideration, and the foundation encourages projects that can be replicated in other classrooms across the nation. DEADLINE: June 1. Lindbergh Foundation grants: The Lindbergh Foundation was created in honor of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, pioneers in aviation, exploration, conservation, sciences and the humanities. Foundation grants in the area of education include humanities education, the arts and intercultural communication. Grants are awarded up to $10,580 (the cost to build the Spirit of St. Louis, the custom airplane Charles Lindbergh used to make the first solo trans-Atlantic flight in 1927). Grants are open to any adult, including educators and those representing non profit organizations. DEADLINE: June 12. Music Is Revolution grants: The Music Is Revolution Foundation administers a mini-grant program for Music Is Revolution activities designed by teachers to implement, support and/or improve their ability to provide quality music education for their students. Mini-grants of up to $500 are available to teachers for music education activities of all types. Public school teachers of children in grades K–12 are eligible. Funds may be used for supplies, materials, equipment, transportation for a field trip and/or to bring a performer or musical group to the school. DEADLINE: April 15.
