Christopher Columbus awards: Teachers, this is something you can do with your students. These awards, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Christopher Columbus Foundation, encourage teams of middle school students to use science to improve their communities. Teams of three or four students in grades 6–8 and one adult coach can apply. The teams will identify a problem in the community, research it and devise an innovative solution. Eight finalist teams will receive a $200 grant to further develop their program presentation and an all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World. Of these, two gold-prize teams will receive a $2,000 savings bond for each team member, and one of these teams will receive $25,000 to fully develop their ideas in their community.
