Funds for physical ed teachers: Physical education teachers who are interested in integrating fishing and boating programs into their mainstream physical education curriculum may have a shot at $5,000. The Future Fisherman Foundation, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education are requesting proposals for the 2007–2008 school year under the Phys Ed National Fishing and Boating Education Grants Initiative. The partnership requests proposals to incorporate quality, viable fishing and boating programs into curriculum-based K–12 physical education classes. Objectives must emphasize the relationship between fishing/boating and lifetime physical/mental health. Weather education grants: The National Weather Association (NWA) is seeking applications to award Sol Hirsch Education Fund Grants in honor of its former director. NWA will fund projects that are intended to improve classroom instruction in meteorology, and may be used by educators to pay tuition for an accredited course in atmospheric science, to attend a conference, or to purchase materials for the classroom. Excellence in teaching awards: The Turnaround Management Association recognizes outstanding elementary and secondary school teachers with the Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Awards Program. Funded by a grant from the John W. Butler Foundation Inc., it honors classroom teachers who have changed the outcome of students’ lives and the communities in which they live. Awards are for $5,000 each to three to five teachers plus travel and lodging expenses to the 2007 annual convention in Boston, Mass., Oct. 16–19. History grants: The History Channel offers grants of up to $10,000 for Save Our History projects about community preservation in which school groups and historical organizations collaborate. Target Store grants: Target Store grants support local communities by offering early childhood reading grants to schools, libraries and non-profit organizations where a Target Store is located. Grants support such programs as weekend book clubs and after-school reading programs that promote a love of reading and encourage children from birth through age 9 to read together with their families. Target also funds programs that make the arts accessible to school children, programs that bring the arts to schools or allow students to participate in cultural experiences, such as field trips to the theater or symphony, or artist residencies and workshops in school. Tech Museum awards: The Tech Museum of Innovation, a California-based science and technology museum, is offering — with sponsorship from Applied Materials Inc. — a cash award of $50,000 for an educator who uses technology in a creative way to enhance education for learners of all ages. Nominations, including self-nominations, are currently being accepted. Factors such as improving learning for those with disabilities and also those who lack resources or are geographically isolated will be considered. DEADLINE: March 26. Immigration curriculum grants: The American Immigration Law Foundation, a non-profit organization seeking to increase the understanding of immigration law, is planning to distribute grant funds for K–12 projects that educate students about immigrants and immigration, in general. Grants between $500 and $1,000 are offered to educators. Grantees will need to submit a summary lesson plan and sample materials to AILF by the end of the project period.
