Prudential Foundation grants: The philanthropic arm for Prudential Financial is seeking applications for its Ready to Learn Program, which supports efforts in primary education. Public elementary schools can apply for grants ranging between $25,000 and $1 million. The program funds projects designed to promote school reform, improve teacher and educational leadership skills, increase parental involvement, arts education and early childhood care and education, as well as bolster literacy in a child’s early years. Tolerance education: The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project offers grants of up to $2,500 to K-12 teachers for activities promoting diversity, peacemaking, community service or other aspects of tolerance education. Proposals should include a 500-word description of the project and a budget. DEADLINE: None. Lindbergh Foundation grants: The Lindbergh Foundation was created in honor of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, pioneers in aviation, exploration, conservation, sciences and the humanities. Foundation grants in the areas of education include humanities education, the arts, and intercultural communication. Grants are awarded up to $10,580 (the cost to build the Spirit of St. Louis, the custom airplane Charles Lindbergh used to make the first solo, trans-Atlantic flight in 1927). Grants are open to any adult, including educators and those representing non-profit organizations. DEADLINE: June 14. Teacher of merit award: National History Day, an academic organization dedicated to opportunities for elementary and secondary school students to learn about history, is seeking nominations for the Richard Farrell Teacher of Merit Award. The award, named in memory of former history professor Richard Farrell, is designed to honor innovation in history teaching both inside and outside of the classroom. One teacher will win a $1,000 stipend and plaque of recognition. K–12 teachers who participate in the National History Day program are eligible. DEADLINE: May 1. CONTACT: Richard T. Educator of the year: Experienced educators can apply for the Road Scholar Educator of the Year Awards. Three awards are offered: one $7,000 award; one $2,000 award, and one for $1,000. Eligible applicants are active educators with at least 15 years of experience in K–12 education and include teachers, school librarians, school nurses and guidance counselors. DEADLINE: August 1. Looking for Mr. Tu: BestQuest Teaching Systems, a company that uses DVD technology to create programs for K–12 schools, is looking for a real-live Mr. Tu. Mr. Tu is a robot who motivates children to learn about mathematics in BestQuest’s math school DVD program. The company is searching for a Mr. Tu to include in their products. Teachers, administrators and students are invited to nominate their favorite 5th- to 9th-grade math teacher for the talent search. The winner will receive DVD learning products, will be featured in one of the company’s products, and will earn a classroom party and a voucher to attend a regional conference of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
