Hope for Education contest: Samsung Electronics is seeking applications for its 2007 Hope for Education essay contest. Hope is an educational and philanthropic program designed to minimize the technology gap in the educational system by providing winners with Samsung technology and Microsoft software. Those who enter the contest must submit a 100-word essay about their school, answering the question, “What is the single most significant benefit that technology can provide the classroom?” Grand prize is worth $200,000 worth of technology products and 30 schools will also benefit from $60,000 worth of technology and software. Prizes include plasma, LCD and DLP high-definition televisions; computer monitors; PCs; phones; camcorders; DVD players; color printers and more. K–12 students, parents, teachers and administrators are eligible to apply. DEADLINE: July 22. Maitland P. Simmons Award: This award for new teachers is sponsored by the National Science Teachers Association. It will be awarded to a teacher who has taught less than three years full time and is an NSTA member in good standing. Up to $1,000 will be awarded to be used to attend the NSTA national conference. Science teachers awards: Delta Education LLC, a company that provides educational tools for teachers, is partnering with the National Science Teachers Association to sponsor the Delta Education/CPO Science Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching to recognize teachers of science who use inquiry-based techniques in the classroom. Three teachers will receive $1,500 toward expenses to attend the NSTA conference and also a cash prize of $1,500. Full-time pre-K–12 science teachers who have taught science for at least one year can apply. DEADLINE: Oct. 15. Healthy Sprouts awards: To encourage the growth of health-focused youth gardens, the National Gardening Association is seeking applications for the Healthy Sprouts Awards, sponsored by Gardener’s Supply. The awards support school and youth gardens that teach about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the U.S. Awards will be made to 20 schools or organizations. Recipients will receive certificates for purchase of gardening materials from the sponsoring company. Five winners will receive certificates of $500; 15 or more will receive a $200 certificate. Winners will also receive a handbook on nutrition, packets of seeds, literature and other benefits of supporting the NGA. Language arts award: The International Reading Association is seeking applications for the Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award. The award honors an outstanding regular classroom elementary teacher of reading and language arts in grades K–6, who is dedicated to improving teaching and learning and willing to write about his or her teaching and learning process.
