Grants, awards and freebies - April 23, 2009

NASA and USA Today competition: The No Boundaries National Competition, developed by NASA and USA Today, asks youth to develop a project that markets careers at NASA to teens in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math. Entrants may work individually and in small groups (of four). First Place: Individual/Student Group (max four) includes a prize of $2,000; Teacher/coach/sponsor receives $500. Second Place: Individual/Student Group (max four) includes a prize of $1,000; Teacher/coach/sponsor receives $500. Third Place: Individual/Student Group (max four) includes a prize of $500; Teacher/coach/sponsor receives $500. Winners will also receive free VIP passes to a shuttle launch and may be asked to present their project to NASA officials. K–12 schools can apply. Individual groups will develop and present a project (podcast, Web site, newspaper, song, artwork, etc.) that markets their career to teens. After presenting their work to peers, groups are encouraged to enter their project in the No Boundaries National Competition. DEADLINE: May 15. Immigration-themed grants: The American Immigration Law Foundation seeks to provide funding for innovative immigration-themed classroom projects. Grants range from $100 to $500 and K–12 educators can apply. Special consideration will be given to proposals that include the following elements: innovative use of technology; under-represented minorities; community outreach and partnerships with community-based organizations; and math and science. Gardener’s award: The Gardener’s Supply Company is accepting nominations for the Garden Crusader Awards which honor individuals who are improving their world through gardening. Grand-prize winner will receive $2,000 in cash and a $2,500 gift certificate from Gardener’s Supply; first-place winners will receive a $1,000 gift certificate; second-place winners will receive a $750 gift certificate; third-place winners will receive a $500 gift certificate; and honorable mentions will receive a $200 gift certificate. Nominations may be made under one of the following four categories: education; feeding the hungry; restoration; and urban renewal. DEADLINE: June 15. Focus on Learning Grant: Samsung Techwin’s Focus on Learning Grant Program wants to help teachers upgrade the quality of technology tools in American schools by offering 50 Samsung 850DX document cameras to applicants based on need. The award is valued at $899. Applicants must be currently teaching in a U.S. classroom and use the camera in the classroom (although the camera will become the property of the teacher’s school district). DEADLINE: June 15. Lindbergh Foundation grants: The Lindbergh Foundation was created in honor of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, pioneers in aviation, exploration, conservation, sciences and the humanities. Foundation grants in the areas of education include humanities education, the arts and intercultural communication. Grants are awarded up to $10,580 (the cost to build the Spirit of St. Louis, the custom airplane Charles Lindbergh used to make the first solo, trans-Atlantic flight in 1927). Grants are open to any adult, including educators and those representing nonprofit organizations. DEADLINE: June 11.
