Professional development grants: The International Reading Association is accepting applications for the IRA Gertrude Whipple Professional Development Program to support the planning and creation of professional development projects. Grants of up to $5,000 are available. IRA members and the various education agencies with which they are associated can apply. In addition to providing development assistance, the IRA will provide support for the production of high quality materials, marketing and scheduling of meetings and workshops and logistic support for conducting them. Virtual tour through the Smithsonian: The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies is offering a new series of free, online cultural heritage tours that invite educators, families and students to explore the Smithsonian’s rich array of heritage-related treasures. Teachers will find pre-, during- and post-visit activities, downloadable images for classroom display and information on Standards of Learning addressed. School grant: Hear Me! Hear Me! The Calypso School First Foundation (CSFF) recognizes the importance of hearing and being heard in the classroom. Classroom audio reinforcement is a tool that helps special needs children participate, while leading to improved performance among all students. The Be Heard/School Grant provides a schoolwide sound-field reinforcement system to three schools in the 2009-2010 school year. K–12 public, non-profit, charter and private schools can apply. New teacher assistance program: New teachers often lack as many resources as their students need. Wilbooks would like to help new pre-K, kindergarten, 1st-grade and 2nd-grade classroom teachers by offering new teachers 30 completely free books to use in their classrooms. There is no charge for these books nor are there any shipping charges. There is a limit of two sets per school per year. Applications are online at: www.wilbooks.com/freebooks. There are other free books for teachers offered on the site such as free books in Spanish for your students and free books to support your Summer Reading Program.
Teaching Improvisation grants: The NEA Foundation, in collaboration with the National Association of Music Education, requests proposals for the Teaching Improvisation Grants program to support public educators’ work to teach improvisation to middle and high school music students. Grants range from $2,000 to $5,000 and teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff can apply. Educators can apply for the Teaching Improvisation Grants through the foundation’s existing grants programs: either the Student Achievement or Learning & Leadership grants. Teacher academy: NSTA New Science Teacher Academy, co-founded by the Amgen Foundation, is a professional development initiative created to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence and improve teacher content knowledge. As an NSTA Fellow, you will receive: Comprehensive NSTA membership and its benefits; an opportunity to participate in a variety of Web-based professional development activities, including Web seminars; unlimited use of resources including vetted Web links for lesson plans, links to state and national standards, professional organizations, safety tips and more; an opportunity to participate in e-mentoring developed by NSTA, the New Teacher Center, and Montana State University that includes: e-mentoring with an experienced teacher in the same science discipline and grade level; facilitated online curriculum that focuses on science content and applicable classroom pedagogy; access to a nationwide, online network of science educators and scientists that facilitates the exchange of information, ideas and resources; accommodations, coverage of airfare, food, and registration fees to attend the NSTA national conference; and an opportunity to participate in specialized conference pathways and to participate in a Research Dissemination Conference or a Professional Development Institute. New Science Teacher Academy Fellows must be entering their second or third year of teaching and working a schedule with 51 percent of their classes in middle or high school science.
