Honoring excellence: KnowledgeWorks Foundation and the American Architectural Foundation seek submissions for the Richard Riley Award, which recognizes design and educational excellence in "schools as centers of community" — schools that provide an array of social, civic, recreational and artistic opportunities to the broader community and to students, often clustering educational and municipal buildings together. If your school is a center of community that demonstrates innovative design ideas and helps promote student achievement, your school could win $5,000. GoGirlGo! awards: The Ambassador Team Awards, championed by Gatorade, recognize those who demonstrate community leadership by inspiring girls to get involved in sports and physical activities. Twenty teams will be awarded $2,500. Teams must select a captain to act as an ambassador and design a project to involve girls in sports. Projects must be original. Schools, amateurs, community and/or nonprofit-affiliated teams whose members are female and in grades 9–12 can apply. Examples of projects include: hosting a sports clinic, leading an after-school fitness/dance group or helping coach a girls’ Little League team. DEADLINE: July 17. Entrepreneur fellowships: The Mind Trust is accepting applications for Educational Entrepreneur Fellowships, a national incubator for transformative education ventures, which offers promising education entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop and launch their break-the-mold education ventures and the suppport necessary for success. Fellows will receive an annual salary of $90,000 for two years, benefits and a $20,000 stipend for travel and professional development. The fellowship is a full-time responsibility; fellows may not have additional employment, consulting contracts or other professional responsibilities. DEADLINE: July 31 for letters of intent. Classroom Innovators: Toshiba America Foundation is accepting applications for grants to support innovative projects designed by math and science teachers to make their own classrooms more exciting and successful for students. DEADLINE: Large grant applications (grades 7-12) are due Aug. 3. NASA contest: The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies invites educators to submit their best examples of using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope for science, technology, engineering or mathematics education. Winning educators will have their entry featured online in the Top Stars Showcase and receive a high-quality photo print of a Hubble image, an invitation to attend a special briefing by a Hubble scientist or engineer and recognition as Top Stars on NASA Web sites. The top 10 overall winning entries will receive, in addition to aforementioned awards: an official letter of commendation from NASA; an interview for a feature article on nasa.gov (individual articles are planned featuring each educator or team of educators); and an invitation to present their entry to other educators nationwide over the NASA Digital Learning Network. Energy-efficient classroom of the future: Lutron Electronics Co. Inc. is accepting entries for the 2009 Bright Green Dream: A School Sustainability Challenge, that encourages teachers and their students to evaluate their classroom environment — then propose creative solutions for increasing energy efficiency, enhancing the learning environment and reducing their carbon footprint. The goal is to identify areas that have the greatest effect on sustainability in the classroom. The winning entry in the Bright Green Dream School Sustainability Challenge will receive a $15,000 sustainable classroom upgrade, to be installed in your school later this year. K–12 educators can apply. TIP: The challenge is an exclusively digital competition; entries will only be accepted through Web site submission. DEADLINE: Sept. 25. Art education grants: The National Art Education Association supports projects through the Mary McMullan grant fund that promote art education as an integral part of the curriculum and establish or improve the instruction of art in public and private elementary and secondary schools as well as schools of higher education. Grants of up to $1,000 are offered. Active NAEA members who have been members for at least one year prior to the application, state/province associations of NAEA and recognized special issues groups of the NAEA can apply. Projects should fall under one of the following three areas: curriculum models; pilot projects; or policy models. DEADLINE: Oct. 1. Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy: The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is a one-week, all-expense-paid intensive professional development program for 3rd- through 5th-grade teachers. The academy offers a five-day program designed to provide 3rd- through 5th-grade teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in science and math. One hundred teachers will be accepted. The 2010 academy will take place at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J. Phil and Amy Mickelson partnered with ExxonMobil to develop the academy in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions. DEADLINE: Oct. 31. MetLife Fellowships: Teachers Network offers MetLife Fellowships for New York City public school teachers in their Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI) for the 2009–2010 school year. TNLI MetLife Fellows receive a stipend of $1,000, participate in online dialogues with other fellows, meet once a month on Saturday with influential policy-makers and conduct action research studies in their classroom — addressing the direct link between policy-making and student achievement. Fellows develop policy recommendations, document their work in major publications and disseminate their findings to policy-makers at all levels. DEADLINE: June 26.
