McCarthey Dressman Teacher Development Grants: The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation considers applications for financial support from educators who are: licensed K–12 teachers; have the background and experience to complete the project successfully; and are willing to work in collaboration with the Foundation. The Teacher Development Grants provide funding to small teams of teachers in the formation and implementation of groundbreaking K–12 classroom instruction. It provides opportunities for teachers to integrate fresh strategies that encourage critical inquiry and to observe their effects on students. Teachers have the opportunity to reflect and write about their projects, as well as to share their results with other teachers. Awards of up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of three years will be given out, provided the eligibility continues to be met. DEADLINE: May 1. CONTACT: www.mccartheydressman.org/teacher.html.
National History Day: National History Day announces the 2008 Richard T. Farrell Teacher of Merit Award for innovative history teaching. The award recognizes outstanding teachers at the state level and one exceptional history teacher at the national level who will receive a cash prize of $1,000 during the National History Day contest in June. The eight finalists for the award will be recognized at the national level and each will receive a PBS video library. To be eligible teachers must be participants in a National History Day program and be nominated by the state History Day coordinator. DEADLINE: May 1. CONTACT: Richard T. School newspaper grants: The Newspaper Association of America Foundation offers Student/Newspaper Patnership Grants. All public and private schools serving grades 7–12 and working in partnership with daily or non-daily professional newspapers are eligible to receive grants of up to $5,000. Schools are also encouraged to seek a university or college as an additional partner. Funding priority will be given to start-up student newspapers. However, grant applications to relaunch or revitalize former or current programs will be considered. DEADLINE: May 16. CONTACT: Applications are on the Web at www.naafoundation.org. Ultimate Science Fair: Elmer’s Glue, along with Discovery Education, will send a team of parents, students and teachers to the Discovery Education Young Scientist Challenge. To enter, participants have to cast a vote for their school. The school with the most votes relative to its student enrollment wins. Three parents, three teachers and three students from the winnig school will receive airfare, hotel, meals and the opportunity to participate in the Challenge events. In addition, five second-place winners will get $1,000 in prizes from Discovery Education and Elmer’s. K–12 schools and students in the U.S. are eligible. DEADLINE: May 31. MetLife Fellowships: Teachers Network offers MetLife Fellowships for New York City public school teachers in their Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI) for the 2008–2009 school year. TNLI MetLife Fellows receive a stipend of $1,000, participate in online dialogues with other fellows, meet once a month on Saturday with influential policy-makers and conduct action research studies in their classroom — addressing the direct link between policy-making and its effect on student achievement. Fellows develop policy recommendations, document their work in major publications and disseminate their findings to policy-makers at all levels. Touro College summer program: Touro College Education Research Center will offer three classes for public school teachers who teach students with limited proficiency in English. The first class in the series is “Trends and Current Issues in Second Language Acquisition,” followed by “Basic Reading and Writing Instruction: Reading and Wrting for Second Language Learners,” and “Second Language Learners and Content-Areas.” The summer classes will be held twice weekly from July 7 to Aug. 14, at 50 West 23 St., Manhattan. The series of three courses are three credits each and can be applied towards 35 hours of professional development. All three courses must be completed. Up to 40 teachers will be accepted into the program for free, but there is a registration fee of $100 per semester and a $50 application fee. DEADLINE: June 25. Photoshop technology free online: Adobe Systems Inc. has announced that Adobe Photoshop Express public beta, a free Rich Internet Application, is available to anyone who wants to store, sort and show off digital photos. Users can store up to two gigabytes of images online for free, make edits to their photos, and share them online in creative ways. Adobe Photoshop Express beta is available at www.photoshop.com/express.
