Teacher of the Year Award: Teachers’ Insurance Plan is now accepting nominations for its Teacher of the Year Award, which recognizes one teacher in each state for the contribution he or she has made toward the betterment of their school, students or education community. Winners will receive a $1,000 cash prize. In addition the school that employs the winning teacher receives $500 to use for school supplies, equipment or enrichment programs. DEADLINE: April 30. Material world grants: ASM International, a professional society for materials engineers and scientists (who work with plastics, metals, composites, ceramics, polymers and the like), wants to excite young people about careers in materials science. It is offering 10 $500 grants to K-12 teachers who bring hands-on teaching to the subject. Members of the society will work with teachers to develop science lessons on how to use applied engineering techniques in the classroom. DEADLINE: May 25. Financial literacy: The American Bankers Association Foundation recently released a new financial education resource that makes it easy for educators to teach personal finance skills. The booklet covers budgeting, credit, checking accounts and savings. The booklets are priced for large quantities. For example, a graduating senior class can get booklets for as little as 60 cents apiece. CONTACT: www.abaef.com.
Win a green school makeover: Schools in the New York area can nominate themselves for a green makeover through Ford Motor Company and Paige Hemmis, a designer from ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Ford is sponsoring a nationwide contest that will award one K–12 school an eco-friendly makeover worth $250,000. Students, parents, community members, staff and teachers can nominate a school by submitting an essay. Green improvements made to the winning school will be based on their specific needs. Fordham Fellows: The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation Fellowship program seeks to bring bright and ambitious people into the world of education policy. Five fellows will go to Washington, D.C., in fall 2008 to work full time for nine months (Labor Day to Memorial Day) at a different education policy organization in the city. Each will be integrated into that organization, be involved in a challenging project, have access to organization leaders and contribute to fulfilling the organization’s mission and goals. Excellence in Teaching awards: Applications are still being accepted for the 2008 Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Awards from the Turnaround Management Association. Applicants must be licensed and active elementary or secondary school teachers employed by accredited schools for at least five years. Teachers may nominate themselves or be nominated by others. The awards recognize teachers who have changed the lives of students and communities in which they live. Three to five awards of $5,000 will be offered.
