UFT, press photographers sponsor photography contest for students

Do you have any students who are photo-driven? New York City public school teachers with students who excel in photography should encourage them to enter the first New York Press Photographers Association-UFT Photo Contest.

The contest is open to students in grades 7-12. There are three categories for entries: People, Animals and Pictorials — which essentially is anything that doesn’t fit in the first two categories.

There will be awards of $200 to the winners and two $100 honorable mention awards in each category.

“We have so many talented students enrolled in our public schools that this is a great opportunity for those who excel in photography to get some well-deserved recognition,” UFT President Randi Weingarten said.

Entries are limited to 10 per person.

Each photo should be submitted individually, using the JPEG format, via e-mail to studentcontest@nyppa.org. Each entry should indicate the category, a one-sentence description of the photo, the student’s name, grade, school and teacher’s name, and contact information. Giving the photo a title is optional.

Images may be cropped and toned, and may be in color or black and white. But digital manipulations, such as by using Adobe Photoshop, are not permitted.

Photos will be judged based on quality and content by a panel from the NYPPA and the UFT.

“We are thrilled to be entering into a relationship with the United Federation of Teachers where young people can express themselves, their environment and feelings with a camera,” said NYPPA President Ray Stubblebine. “Photography can be an important way of communicating. The NYAPP is happy that it can give New York City public school students an opportunity to express themselves visually through this contest.”

Each entrant may win just one award per category.

Awards will presented in July at the opening of the NYPPA’s annual exhibit at the Forbes Galleries in Manhattan, where the winning entries will be displayed. Winning photos will also be included in the 2008 NYPPA Photo Annual.

Professionals are not permitted to enter.

The New York Press Photographers Association, founded in 1915, is the oldest press organization in the world, still existing to serve working photographers as a professional and social organization. Association members work for news organizations in the print and electronic media based within a 75-mile radius of Manhattan.

Teaching with primary sources program:

Waynesburg University, in collaboration with the Library of Congress, is currently accepting proposals for its Teaching with Primary Sources Program. The mission of the program is to foster collaborations between the education community and the Library of Congress digital sources within K–12 classrooms. The program focuses on the integration of primary sources in K–12 education, existing preservice and graduate-level education curriculum, and teacher professional development programs. Funds ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 are available. DEADLINE: Rolling. Free online site for primary school teachers:

Education By Design, which develops interactive games to provide organizations with a means to quickly distribute learning materials, is launching a new site called Learning Impulse. Targeted for use in primary school classrooms, Learning Impulse is a Web-based interactive tool that can be used to reinforce lessons and information taught in the classroom. It was designed to help get students more enthusiastic about classroom lessons. It is free for use to educators. CONTACT: Visit www.learningimpulse.com to learn more.

NEA Learning & Leadership Grants:

These grants support high-quality professional development opportunities, such as summer institutes, action research, collegial study, lesson study and mentoring. Eligible applicants must be pre-K–12 teachers, educational support professionals or higher education faculty and staff. Public school teachers are encouraged to apply for grants ranging from $2,000 to $5,000; 75 awards will be given out. DEADLINE: June 1. CONTACT: www.neafoundation.org. Live Green Teacher Grants:

The Live Green Teacher Grant Program, a Discovery Education Program presented by General Motors, challenges middle school teachers to develop innovative ideas for furthering environmental and energy sustainability. Forty grants of $1,000 each will be awarded. In addition, the 40 recipients will be treated to an online professional development program designed to help them reach their school’s specific green initiatives, including a free digital camera to document and share the experience. Environmental education award:

The Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award is awarded annually to an outstanding educator who has successfully integrated environmental education into his or her daily education program. The award will be given to an educator who can serve as an inspiration and role model for others. A $5,000 cash award will be provided for the recipient to continue work in environmental education. Teachers from grades 5 to 12 are eligible for this award. Nominations are welcome from anyone involved with the nominee (parents, administrators, fellow teachers, students, etc.). History grants:
