National Italian-American Foundation: The foundation makes grants to promote, preserve and protect Italian-American heritage and culture. Two of their grant programs are for teachers and schools: Italian language study grants ($500 to $2,000 each) help to expand the teaching of Italian in schools; and culture and heritage grants ($2,000 to $15,000 each) can be used for a variety of projects, including: documentaries, doctoral research, exhibits, conferences, plays, etc. DEADLINE: Nov. 30 for both programs. Chemical Education Foundation competition: The Foundation is looking to reward educators’ lesson plans through its You Be The Chemist Lesson Plan Competition. Winners will present their innovative teaching techniques for experiments focused on K–8 physical science concepts, and may help develop new resources for educators, as well as promote best practices among educators. There are three competition categories and each one will provide $1,000 for the winner; $500 for the first runner-up. Each first-place winner will receive $250 for his or her school. Lesson plans should be submitted for either scientific inquiry, structure or matter and human and environmental chemistry. DEADLINE: Dec. 21. Technology education grant: The Foundation for Technology Education, along with Pitsco/Hearlihy & Company, is seeking applications for a grant to help technology teachers at the K–12 level. The grant will recognize and encourage the integration of a quality technology education within the school curriculum. The grant is for $2,000 for improving instruction. Applicants must be members of the International Technology Education Association. Criteria for judging include evidence of an effective technology education program and documented success in the integration of technology education with other academic subjects. DEADLINE: Dec. 1. Literacy Teacher of the Year: The National Center for Family Literacy, along with Toyota, is accepting nominations for its Literacy Teacher of the Year award. NCFL is a worldwide leader in promoting family literacy and the award is intended to recognize a teacher who has strived to make educational gains in literacy. The award will consist of $5,000 for supporting the winner’s program and a free trip to the National Conference on Family Literacy. Any teacher who is a high-performing educator in the area of literacy can apply. The candidate must be nominated by a parent or adult student. DEADLINE: Dec. 5. Arts Connect All grants: VSA Arts, along with MetLife Foundation, is now accepting applications for Arts Connect All grants. Both organizations are interested in promoting arts education for students with disabilities throughout the United States and creating and enhancing multi-session, inclusive education programs by strengthening partnerships with public schools. Major goals of the program include enabling more students with disabilities to experience social, cognitive and cultural development through arts learning alongside their peers without disabilities; and creating educational access and inclusion in the arts for students with disabilities. There will be 10 grants of up to $15,000 each awarded. Nonprofit arts organizations that collaborate with public schools can apply. DEADLINE: Dec. 7. Fair Trade Study Grant: Offered by Cafe Bom Dia and Sam’s Club, the 2007–2008 Fair Trade Study Grant is a week-long, intensive study of how Fair Trade Certified coffee is produced and the impact Fair Trade has on Brazilian communities. Study grants will be awarded to teachers who express exceptional ideas to educate students on economic, social and business lessons surrounding fair trade. Ten teachers will win an expenses-paid trip to visit Fair Trade Certified Coffee Farms, cooperatives and community schools in southern Brazil. The grant opportunity is open to full-time junior high and high school teachers who can reasonably expect to teach at least 15 hours a week during the 2008–2009 school year and dedicate at least five lessons to topics related to Fair Trade. Visionary grant: The GenevaLogic Foundation is a private organization based in Switzerland and was established to support initiatives that further the innovative use of technology to improve teaching and learning. Dedicated to the success of teachers all over the world, the GenevaLogic Foundation provides programs and grants to give educators resources and technology products to advance education. Valued at $10,000, the GenevaLogic Visionary Grant is available to K–12 schools, accredited community colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. Four awards will be given out.
