Outstanding Young Educator: The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) makes this award to honor a teacher under the age of 40 who demonstrates exemplary commitment and has made exceptional contributions to the profession. The winner will receive $10,000, be profiled in Educational Leadership magazine and win an ASCD institutional membership for his/her school district. DonorsChoose: DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that can help teachers in New York City get resources for their classroom. Teachers submit ideas for materials and experiences that their students need to learn. Individual donors search proposals by areas of interest to learn about the classroom needs and then choose which project to fund. DonorsChoose will contact your school if your project is chosen. Reading grants: Sponsored by the International Reading Association (IRA), the Eleanor M. Johnson Award recognizes an outstanding elementary classroom teacher of the reading/language arts. The award is named for the Eleanor M. Johnson, founder and editor-in-chief of Weekly Reader magazine. The award is for $1,000. Elementary classroom teachers who are IRA members and have a minimum of five years of teaching experience can apply. Applicants must be endorsed by four individuals. DEADLINE: Nov. 15. Free software training: Vernier Software & Technology offers science and math educators nationwide a number of free hands-on workshops in data-collection technology using computers and calculators. The four-hour sessions will teach educators how to integrate the technology into a variety of math and science subjects, including physics and chemistry. Inspired Teacher Scholarships: Inspiration Software is celebrating its 25th anniversary by expanding its Inspired Teacher Scholarship for Visual Learning program to more teachers. The company will award $1,000 each for professional development to 25 educators from KÐ12 schools. The award is to help educators pursue professional development opportunities related to visual learning and technology. DEADINE: Applications will be online beginning Sept. 25. Using Music to Teach Mathematics: Supported by the Esther Mendlesohn Fund and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Using Music to Teach Mathematics grant incorporates music into the elementary school classroom to help youth students learn math. The award is for individual classroom teachers or small groups of teachers collaborating in one grade or across grade levels. Grants of up to $3,000 will be awarded. Applicants must be a member of the NCTM or teach in a school with NICTM KÐ8 membership; also must teach math or collaborate with teacher of math in grades KÐ2. DEADLINE: Nov. 2. Youth gardening grants: The National Gardening Association and the Home Depot have partnered as sponsors of the 2008 Youth Gardening Grants. The grants are intended to benefit child-centered, outdoor garden programs and help teach children life lessons through work in gardens and habitats. Gift cards to Home Depot for gardening materials and supplies and an activity packet from NGA will be handed out. The top 50 programs will receive $500 cards; 100 others receive $250 cards. NASA Explorers: Each year the National Aeronautics and Space Administration selects 50 school teams to participate in a three-year project called NASA Explorer Schools. The initiative promotes and supports the incorporation of NASA content and programs into science, technology and mathematics in 4th- to 9th-grade classrooms nationwide. Teams of teachers and a school administrator are selected to design action plans to address challenges in science and work together with NASA through summer professional development workshops, ongoing research, student programs and more.

Intrepid Sails: The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space MuseumÕs Education Department offers free ÒIntrepid SailsÓ educational programming to teachers. While the Intrepid is undergoing renovation, the museum will travel to New York City public schools. A variety of programming is available for and tailored to children in grades K-12. The programs correlate to the New York State Learning Standards in areas such as social studies; mathematics; science and technology; English language and the arts. Programs have already started and will continue through the school year.
