Science grants: The National Science Teachers Association in conjunction with Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. makes annual grants to support K–12 science teachers’ environmental education, physical science or literacy and science education projects. Fifty one-year grants of up to $10,000 each and 20-32 mini-grants of $2,500 are available. Elementary school teachers who teach some science in the classroom and middle and high school science teachers are eligible. DEADLINE: Jan. 28. The new applications are now available online. Children for Children grants: The nonprofit organization Children for Children provides resources to schools and educators through grant programs to create quality service opportunities for children. To qualify for grants, schools must demonstrate evidence of leadership and progress, despite typically serving a population in which 90 percent or more of the students qualify for the federal free lunch program. Grantees will lead students in a service project benefiting children or others in their community so that the students can gain from the personal benefits of helping others. Past awards have helped schools acquire musical instruments, microscopes, library books and more, and have ranged from $5,000 to $28,000. DEADLINE: Jan. 20. Bookshelf grants: The American Library Association’s Public Programs Office is partnering with the National Endowment for the Humanities for the fifth annual “We the People” bookshelf project. Part of NEH’s “We the People” initiative, the Bookshelf grant program is designed to encourage young people to read and understand literature, while exploring themes in American history. This year’s theme for the grants is “Creative Equal.” As many as 3,000 school libraries will receive a collection of 17 classic hardcover books for young readers that tie into the grant theme (valued at $325). Libraries also will receive four books in Spanish and a bonus kit with DVDs, interactive CD-ROMs, posters, photographs, artwork, maps and songs. Public and K–12 school libraries, which must use the reading selections in programs for young readers in their community, can apply. DEADLINE: Jan. 25. Einstein Fellows: The Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education is seeking fellows for professional staff positions in the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives, at the Department of Energy, or other federal agencies. Educators with at least five years of full-time classroom teaching experience, who teach full time in a public or private elementary or secondary school, and have a current teaching assignment where at least three-fourths of classroom hours are in science, math or technology, can apply. Applicants need to express excellence in the following areas: teaching science, math or technology; ability to have an experimental and innovative approach to teaching; sustained professional growth in science or math in the art of teaching; professional involvement and leadership; interpersonal and communication skills needed to serve in a public policy environment; and knowledge of national, state and local policies which affect education. A stipend for living, travel and moving expenses is provided. DEADLINE: Jan. 13. Learning grants: Einstruction makes real-time, interactive, wireless response pads for classrooms, and is making that technology available through grants to schools. Thirty-six Classroom Performance Systems (CPS) will be awarded, nine per quarter (three each to elementary, middle and high schools). The award will consist of 32 CPS pads, a CPS Chalkboard and content containing thousands of CPS questions from Prentice Hall and Scott Foresman to supplement the winner’s teaching subject. Any educator may apply, whether already a CPS user or just learning about it. An applicant only has to submit an application once per year. DEADLINE: Grants are awarded each fiscal quarter. Do Something Good for You! grant: Del Monte is accepting applications for its “Do Something Good For You!” grant program. The program encourages young people to improve their communities through projects such as healthy eating awareness campaigns or non-competitive walking, running or hiking clubs at school. Applicants will answer an essay question located on the Web site. Eligible applicants are young people age 25 or younger. Award amounts are $2,500. DEADLINE: Rolling. Tech grants: The National Center for Family Literacy is accepting nominations for the 2008 Verizon Tech Savvy Awards. These awards, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, honor programs that improve parents’ and children’s understanding and use of technology. Community-based non-profits, libraries and schools can apply. Presidential awards for math and science teachers: The National Science Foundation is accepting applications for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science (PAEMST), which recognize exceptional middle and high school math and science teachers nationwide. Teachers applying for the PAEMST must first be nominated by a principal, teacher, student or other member of the general public by Feb. 1. Up to 108 winners will receive a presidential citation; a $10,000 award; and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a weeklong series of recognition events and professional development opportunities. Full-time teachers of grades K–6 math or science can apply (grades 7–12 teachers can apply next year). DEADLINE: Feb. 1 for nomination and the application is due May 1. CONTACT: www.paemst.org.
