Bring-troops-home vigil in N.J.
May 24, 2007 4:58 PM
To the Editor:
I would like to bring to the attention of my fellow New York City public school teachers a large vigil in Teaneck, N.J., that will be held on Wednesday, May 30, during Memorial Week.
The theme of the vigil is “Remember the dead — Fight for the living — Bring the troops home NOW!” Military families, veterans, students and other members of the community will carry 20-foot segments of a 3,000-foot banner with the names of more than 3,300 U.S. troops killed in Iraq and the names of many Iraqi people who were killed.
Volunteers are needed to carry the banners. To participate, people can register online at www.teaneckpeace.org or www.bergenjustice.net. The event is sponsored by Military Families Speak Out, Teaneck Peace and Justice Coalition, Veterans for Peace, Chapter 21, Bergen Peace and Justice Coalition, and WITS, World Improvement by Tenafly Students.
We welcome UFT members from Bergen County and New York City. We will assemble at 4:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, at the corner of Liberty Road and Teaneck Road in Teaneck, and remain there until 6 p.m., rain or shine. There is bus transportation from Penn Station right to the National Guard Armory.
