Letters to the Editor

Conservatively speaking ...

To the Editor:

As a retired teacher and a conservative, I feel compelled to reply to the [March 13] letter by Ed Beller. Mr. Beller objects to the wording in Sol Stern’s [Jan. 31] article, but then proceeds to take much the same road, referring to “our sworn enemies” and giving “the likes of Stern a free ride.” Apparently, Mr. Beller assumes incorrectly that union members are all in agreement on the solutions to the educational issues mentioned by Mr. Stern.

Unnoticed by the media is the fact that on educational campuses all over the country attempts to shut down conservative views are occurring continually. Our democratic society is supposed to be a place where opposing views can be heard. The union’s official viewpoint on the issues mentioned by Stern is, or should be, well-known by now, and the response that Mr. Beller demands is superfluous.

Opposition views by the union’s conservative minority receive scant positive airing, even though they represent the opinions of a substantial segment of the population. That’s why it was essential that our newspaper publish Sol Stern’s article, with or without a response.

Walter Audubon, retired
