Consumers need federal protection
Sep 17, 2009 2:42 PM
To the Editor:
Consumer protection by the federal government is desperately needed in light of widespread consumer fraud and deceptive practices by banks and other business. These practices — which include outrageous credit card rates and mortgage fraud, for example — have resulted in enormous economic hardship for millions of consumers.
We need to support federal legislation to establish a consumer financial protection agency since consumers need to be protected against fraud and deceptive practices of financial institutions. It is the obligation of the federal government to do so especially since in recent history consumers went unprotected and as a result suffered great economic hardship.
