Letters to the Editor

DOE’s numbers game

To the Editor:

As a school secretary, the mother of a high school senior and the wife of a high school English teacher, I am aware of more situations and problems that occur within the city public school system than most parents are. One such situation is how the administrators of the Department of Education consider children as nothing more than numbers and the long-standing, highly experienced teachers and school staff are nothing more than too much money in the budget.

Why spend $80,000 a year on one experienced teacher when you can get two inexperienced teachers for the same amount?

It is sad to see how teachers aren’t given the opportunity to do what they do best: teach. It is also a shame how schools don’t appreciate the quality that they have in their experienced teachers.

My son’s school, Beach Channel HS, is one school that needs to take a step back and realize that without good and qualified teachers it will not have children who do well or are prepared to enter the real world when they graduate.

Teachers see these children as the future of our country. The DOE sees them as just numbers and nothing more.
