Letters to the Editor

Fewer parking permits means better air quality

To the Editor:

Having met Randi Weingarten I have always been impressed by her leadership and ideas to improve the education of our children. I feel that teachers are usually very concerned about not only teaching our kids but also concerned about their health. If our children are not healthy, then their education will suffer. That is why I was surprised about the opposition to curtailing parking permits for city workers.

Our children are suffering increased amounts of asthma and other respiratory illnesses because of air pollution. Everything should be done to curtail pollution in the city, especially around schools.

The state recently passed a law limiting school buses to idling no more than one minute. Teachers should step up and be active in reducing pollution and that includes the pollution caused by the many cars driving into the city.

I hope that Ms. Weingarten will reverse her position and help our students — and all New Yorkers — to breath easier.
