Be grateful for your union

To the Editor:
I am 82 years old and retired from the New York City Board of Education in 1981. Every month when my pension check comes in, I thank my lucky stars and say God bless Al Shanker for the vision and wonderful leadership he gave our union. I pay my dues every month — it is an honor.
My wife and I get our prescription drugs through Express Scripts and they are always on time with deliveries. We have had numerous operations and, thank God, the bills are always paid and we never worry.
I have been a member of the union since the late 1950s and I am very proud of all the great accomplishments of our wonderful organization. To all the young teachers, I say join the UFT and support it in any way you can. It has made my life so happy and I live with a feeling of security because of all the strides that our union has made.
