Headline upsets member

To the Editor:

I was dismayed and upset at your headline in the April 12 issue: “They tried to kill us, we survived; let’s eat.” This is the punchline of a lame ethnic joke that has no place in our UFT paper.

If this were a Jewish publication, I’d say it simply was in very poor taste. In a paper read mostly by non-Jews, it’s downright disrespectful and inexcusable. The flippant tone of this headline makes a mockery of the serious religious significance of Passover and shows an appalling lack of respect toward the holiday and those who solemnly observe it.

Would you ever consider for a second referring to a major Muslim holiday with such irreverence? I seriously doubt it.

Shame on you for your insensitivity.

Joseph Sommers, retired
