Growing need for health classes

To the Editor,

With the societal increase in childhood obesity and now the emergence of MRSA and its impact on school populations at all levels, it would be nice to have licensed teachers of health (per New York State requirement) in all of our middle and high schools. Unfortunately, that ship has sailed.

Perhaps the new collaboration among physical educators, health educators and the New York City Department of Health will provide administrators with a statistical validation for the establishment of properly staffed classes in health.

In our current data-driven educational environment, we are clearly accumulating health-related statistics that demand attention and require remedy.
