Only looking good

To the Editor:
The extreme emphasis on looking good, as opposed to being good, has infected the academic world like a plague.
This focus on approbation has unfortunately retarded much-needed academic amendments.
Those of us in the academic trenches often struggle between the genuine needs of academic reform and the show called academic progress. Under this type of academic mindset, education is reduced to a performance where progress is measured through a battery of poorly designed tests.
The nightmare of schools being turned into test-taking factories is all-too-real; perhaps it is time for the UFT to have a greater voice in establishing assessment criteria whose primary focus is the needs of our student.
