Letters to the Editor

Measuring the unmeasurable

To the Editor:

It’s a sad day when NYSUT co-sponsors a contrived event called “Teacher of the Year.” Are we, members of NYSUT, to suffer the issuing of an arbitrary award similar to the Miss America contest?

I’m retired now after teaching high school chemistry and general sciences in New York City from 1958 through 1991. It is my understanding that at the high school level, the rapport a teacher establishes with the students is the single most important attribute in a list of very necessary skills. Among the others are the ability to communicate, knowledge of one’s subject matter, etc.

I would give up one month’s pension check to meet the person or group who claims to be able to quantify the comparative worth of teachers.

Gerald Posner, retired
