Letters to the Editor

How money is spent should be priority

To the Editor:

It is certainly appropriate for the UFT to pressure the DOE to restore lost funds. However, by focusing primarily on lost income, we run the risk of overlooking the all-important issue of misspent dollars. How money is spent is just as important as how much money is available.

Misspent and poorly allocated funds run the gamut from meaningless standardized tests to school reviews to highly paid administrators who do not teach. If money is wasted on frivolous academic windmills, increasing the economic pie becomes a futile exercise. The question of much money is available must coincide with how that money is spent.
