Push for para pension bill

To the Editor:

I was pleased to see that the UFT spent time negotiating with the mayor on 55/25. I would like to know if the union spent any time on Bill A 08529. This bill would allow paraprofessionals and former paraprofessionals to join the tier they would have been entitled to join if they were able to when hired.

This is the third year this bill has been in the Legislature and has been vetoed by the governor because the union had not spent time with the mayor to gain his approval.

It was a long fight to get paras in the union and it is very unfair that people working in the early 1970s remain in Tier IV. Our senators and Assembly members have supported this bill but there has been not a word from the union. Why is that?

Rosanne Bopp, PS 721, Queens

EDITOR’S NOTE: This bill was introduced at the request of the UFT and has been a priority not only of the UFT but of its statewide affiliate, NYSUT.
