Letters to the Editor

The strength of physical education classes

To the Editor:

UFT Vice President for Academic High Schools Leo Casey states in a Feb. 14 article headlined “UFT VP: Tweed neglects phys ed” that “the attitude of the New York City school system might as well be ‘Let them eat cake.’” I have to agree.

Administrators are too concerned with the state tests to care about physical education. More PE teachers are needed and there should be at least three for a school of 1,000 students. That there isn’t is a shame since the administrators wouldn’t have one math teacher for the whole school.

Lastly, I invite all administrators to e-mail me at avv1969@aim.com and I will send them a copy of my master’s thesis on PE leading to better academic achievement.
