Letters to the Editor

Housing program makes retiree proud

To the Editor,

I read the article in the New York Teacher about the housing development for our members. Congratulations to all included including the Teachers’ Retirement System Board and UFT President Randi Weingarten regarding this very important development.

As a matter of UFT history, when Al Shanker was our president, he asked Staten Island UFT Borough Representative Joe Shannon and me to follow up on a housing development on Staten Island to be sponsored by UFT. This goes back about 35 years ago.

Joe and I had many evening meetings with state officials — the project was to be funded by the state — but, unfortunately we were not successful because the development was not going to be affordable for our members.

So now I am (and I am sure Joe is) very pleased and proud that we are successful in our efforts to achieve sponsorship of an affordable housing development for our members. Congratulations to all.

Abe Levine, retired
