Solution to parking problems?

To the Editor:

Following the news about possible reduced number of parking permits for teachers [“Mayor’s parking permit edict riles educators,” Jan. 17], I wanted to highlight one aspect of the change that your readers may welcome and that may change how they feel about mass transit: pretax commuter benefits.

Teachers may not be aware that the City of New York offers a commuter benefits program called TransitBenefit. Participants receive a special Premium TransitChek MetroCard which offers unlimited rides on New York City Transit subways and local buses and is automatically funded each month with the employee’s pretax dollars.

Not only will teachers save, but the card also makes commuting easier since they will not have to purchase a new MetroCard each month.

So, as many teachers rethink their path to work, I invite them to visit their agency TransitBenefit coordinator to begin using commuter benefits as a shortcut to savings.
