Letters to the Editor

No ‘Stern’ criticism?

To the Editor:

When neo-con Sol Stern contributed a lengthy piece [Jan. 31] extolling school competition, education markets, privately managed charters, vouchers (calling parents who voted them down stupid and uncaring), the wondrous work of Catholic schools, and using adjectives like “lousy,” “failing,” “dismal,” “future darkening,” to describe public schools, I was sure there would be a rebuttal forthcoming from UFT President Randi Weingarten or Vice President Leo Casey. But none came.

(Eventually Stern alighted upon the profound thought that the most important thing that happens in schools is teaching. I wonder how many advanced degrees, think tank affiliations, and foundation grants it took to figure that out.)

If we must give space in our newspaper to our sworn enemies, let’s do it with the understanding that a counter article will follow. There is no need to give the likes of Stern a free ride.
