What is an ‘anniversary date’ and how do I find out what mine is? Why is this date important

A: Your anniversary date, also called your equated date, is the date you advance to the next step on the salary schedule.

Ordinarily, your anniversary/equated date is your start date and/or the date of your appointment. You would move up the salary schedule one step for each term of satisfactory service on your anniversary/equated date and on March 1 of every year until you reach step 8b, provided you do not have a break in service.

However, if you had prior paid full-time teaching experience (and/or related nonteaching experience for certain license areas) outside of New York City or worked in the city system as a per diem or regular substitute, you may be eligible to receive salary credit. You must apply within six months of your hire/appointment date in order to receive any retroactive money you may be entitled to for prior service. To access the application form for salary credit for prior experience, go to http://schools.nyc.gov/offices/dhr, then click on Salary Step listed under Most Popular Sites and scroll down to the link Click Here to Access the Application for Teacher Salary Step Placement to download and print out the application form. If the Department of Education grants you salary credit, your anniversary/equated date would change to an earlier date.

On the other hand, if you take a leave of absence for maternity and child care or for some other reason, the DOE would recalculate your anniversary/equated date to reflect that break in service.

Your anniversary date is important because the DOE uses it to determine your salary step placement.

The DOE mails a Certificate of Salary Status to each regularly appointed pedagogue. This certificate lists the salary step that you have been placed on and has your anniversary/equated date. Only appointed teachers receive this certificate. If you are unsure of your anniversary/equated date see your payroll secretary or call your UFT borough office and ask for a salary representative.
