A: Salary differentials are an additional way to increase your income on top of salary-step increases and any across-the-board raises that the UFT negotiates in the contract.
Salary differentials are wage raises for school credits or degrees that you earn. You are eligible to apply for each differential as soon as you satisfy the requirements for it — e.g., a master’s degree or 36 credits in your area of specialization. Be sure to apply for your differential within six months of qualifying so that your extra pay will be retroactive to your eligibility date.
Go to How to Read a Salary Chart to learn the qualifications for each differential. For DOE information about salary differentials and to download an application. After completing the application, copy it and all required documentation for your own records. Then send the original “return receipt requested” to the Office of Pedagogical Records and Salary Status, 65 Court St., Room 815, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Applications may also be hand-delivered. If you have further questions regarding differentials, you can e-mail them to SDSSP@nycboe.net.
