New method for distributing parking placards

The Department of Education’s new on-street parking placards for school staff, which will take effect on Nov. 1, will be distributed differently from last year.

Each school’s principal will be assigned the first one, with the rest available to staff members on a first-come, first-served basis daily. Employees will return the placard at the end of the day.

The principal and the chapter leader can determine a different distribution method if they wish and if they both agree.

For schools in campus settings, on-street placard allocation was determined proportionally by student enrollment. However, the placards may be pooled if all schools in the campus agree.

Due to updated information and Department of Transportation surveys of street space, the number of spaces allocated to each school may be different this year. And although the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators is of the opinion that all of its members are now eligible for placards, that issue is being disputed in court.

The DOE has warned principals that they may not assign placards for the exclusive use of APs or other CSA members until the matter is settled.
