Striking food-service workers applauded

Striking members of UNITE HERE appreciate a standing ovation from the delegates.

UFT President Randi Weingarten invited to the Delegate Assembly about 100 UNITE HERE food-service workers and their union leader who had been rallying just down the street on Broadway that afternoon as part of a continuing battle against Aramark Corporation.

The workers had been rallying for higher wages and improved benefits outside the Bank of New York Mellon, where 34 Aramark workers had gone on strike, and Goldman-Sachs, which in addition to hiring Aramark holds a 20 percent interest in the corporation.

Goldman Sachs employees in lower Manhattan average $660,000 a year in salary and bonuses, while the workers who serve them breakfast, lunch and dinner in the company’s executive dining rooms take home $400 a week, UNITE-HERE President Bruce Raynor told the delegates.
