For the sixth straight year, the Friends of District 75 honored individuals whose advocacy has benefited students with special needs. This year's gala, at Brooklyn's El Caribe on April 28, was not only a testimonial to their impact but a fundraiser to help send several special needs children to summer camp. Among the awardees were Chris Proctor, Christine Hepburn, Dorie Kamps, Junior Linton, Lisa Lau, Danny Tong and Miriam Vega, all from the UFT Environmental Health and Safety Department, for raising awareness of risks, prevention of injuries, proactive identification of dangers to students and staff, emergency responses to hazards and performance of site trainings and inspections. Also honored were District 75 Director of Travel Training Margaret "Peggy" Groce, Chapter Leader Hans Marryshow and Principal Oswaldo Roman of PS 256 in Queens, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Teaching and Research in Autism professor and director Dr. Dianne Zager, District 75 Parents Council Vice President Joseph Williams and Pace University, where students with autism are attending college. Reflecting on the diversity and unity of the advocates being honored, Roderick Palton, chapter leader of PS 231 in Brooklyn, said, "It doesn't matter where we sit at the table, as long as we stand together for our children.”
