Alternative Assessments
published July 27, 2010
Although most teachers are annually evaluated based upon the Formal Observation process, the union and the DOE have developed a plan to base your yearly performance review (annual rating) on evaluation procedures that identify and recognize your ability to link your classroom performance with the school’s educational goals. Any alternate assessment requires approval by your principal. The various options open to you can be found in the document entitled “Teaching for the 21st Century,” which is incorporated into our contract in Article 8J.
As you may have heard, there will be new, more objective methods for evaluating teachers in the near future. Based on new legislation, the Department of Education will have to negotiate with the UFT regarding a new evaluation system, within specified guidelines, for all teachers. Until negotiations are completed, the current methods for evaluation remain in place. Keep informed via the New York Teacher, the UFT website, your chapter leader and UFT Borough office.
