Queens Parent Newsletter - June 6, 2019

Dear parents, grandparents, guardians and education activists,

As we look toward the summer, I want to thank you for all your work this school year supporting public schools and your children. This will be the last newsletter of this school year. I hope your family has a fun-filled summer, and I look forward to seeing you at more UFT Queens parent events in the fall.

Upcoming events

  • Saturday, June 8: Come to District 75 family fun day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at PS 233, 91-30 Metropolitan Ave. There will be games, crafts and other hands-on learning activities for children with disabilities.
  • Tuesday, June 11: There will be a rally for smaller class sizes and education equity at noon in front of City Hall in Manhattan. Children are welcome. For more details, email info@classsizematters.com or see the flier »
  • Saturday, July 27: There will be a tea and story time with Belle event from noon to 2 p.m. at 75-27 Metropolitan Ave. The $5 admission includes a meet-and-greet with Belle from "Beauty and the Beast," tea and treats, crafts, a dance party, story time and games. See the event listing »

News you can use

  • Free summer meals at Queens libraries: Kids and teens are welcome to get free breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday all summer long at 1,200 sites across the city, including Queens libraries and parks. There is no enrollment, documentation or ID required. This service will start on Thursday, June 27, and run through Friday, Aug. 30. Find a location near you »
  • Paid internship and job training program: Henry Street Settlement in lower Manhattan has an internship program for young adults between the ages of 17 and 24 who are not working or in school. The program includes a paid internship, GED training for those who need it, job readiness training and one-on-one meetings with an adviser. The next cohort begins on July 8. Find out more »
  • Free homework help from the UFT: The UFT's Dial-A-Teacher hotline, 212-777-3380, provides homework help to elementary and middle school students on Mondays through Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. when school is in session. Learn more about Dial-A-Teacher »
  • Free events in Queens public parks: The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation hosts free and low-cost fitness classes, nature walks, movie showings, concerts and other family-friendly events all summer. To find events in Queens, see the online calendar »
